So … the cat is out of the bag. Now that it has been introduced in the House, the Minister can no longer suggest that his people have been taking their time in order to get it right! Really? What is there to ‘get right’? It takes less than a minute to read the new amendments in Bill 26, eh? Sheesh … I have written shopping lists longer than this!
Now to be fair, the Minister has still promised that his people will produce a (hopefully) better set of Standards of Care. At the moment, the ETA on that is five or six weeks. In realspeak that should either be the thirteenth or the twentieth of November. That’s November of THIS year, right?
Perhaps he is hoping that this will all be forgotten by then as the holiday season settles in around us. Maybe the Minister is gambling that this time no one will give a rats a** how cold it can get here in Nova Scotia in November. Or December! Or any other month from now until next May!
I was truly hoping that this time we would see a chain-ge from the same tired old equation that keeps rolling around. Strong grassroots advocacy + strong voter feedback = teeny tiny band-aid bit offered up in the mistaken hope that it would satisfy and shut everyone up! Each and every time this has happened …right across the political party spectrum.
How has that worked so far? What do you think? This is Nova Scotia, not Nassau, eh? In realspeak that means that it is impossible to forget about animals suffering in the cold when we are confronted by the harsh realities of winter for months and months at a time. Even worse, failure on the part of any sitting government to make meaningful chain-ge speaks volumes about how backward and behind the times they believe their constituents to be.
Saddest of all of course is that all the animals still keep getting the short end of the stick. Today it breaks my heart that it is still perfectly legal to shoot a cat or a dog. That backyard breeders and puppy brokers are still at liberty to take advantage of kind hearts who simply want a nice pet. And of course … even as the nights keep getting colder … it is still perfectly legal to sentence living, breathing sentient beings to life on the end of a chain.
Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
That’s how it goes, everybody knows
Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
Everybody knows that the captain lied
Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died
Everybody talking to their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
And a long stem rose, everybody knows
