Reaching to the future

I love making pizza!   I know it is more work than picking up the phone!    By the time the ingredients are all added up, it is definitely more expensive than anything from the freezer aisle!

So why do I bother?    Because … like anything else in life … sometimes the very best bits are only achievable with extra effort!

Last month, a tiny little four-month old puppy was returned to the breeder when he became paralyzed.     What happened then?   Why the breeder brought the puppy into the vets to be euthanized …. and normally that would have been the end of the road for the poor little bug.

Luckily for the puppy, that vet was able to convince the breeder that there could be a brighter outcome for the little fellow!    So he was surrendered to Atlantic Small Dog Rescue and THAT is where this story really begins!

Coming out of the gate, they knew it was going to be a challenge!    The little laddie needed a catheter and had to be hand fed.  There was a strong possibility that he would never get any better 😦

Still …. in true ASDR style, they had to try.    It did not matter that he needed a neck brace because he could not lift his head.    His foster Mom named him Joey and brought the tiny little puppy home.

Why did they do this when the prognosis was so glum?    Do they have a bottomless bank account?  No other, healthier waiting to be rescued?   Of course not!

Joey was saved because all experienced and reputable rescuers know that anything is possible when love is added into the equation!   Dogs do not bring our human hangups to the table and …. because they live in the ‘now’ ….  are not handcuffed by any preconceptions about outcomes.

(the testy topic of the society officially defining treatable and savable by the dollar sign pales in comparison to that … and will continue to be discussed on this blog until the animals matter more than the political infighting in the society, eh? )

But I am wandering afield, as I am wont to do in my meandering way!    The short version of this story was a real little holiday miracle!   What happened after Joey went home with his foster Mum?   Unbelievably …. the unimaginable happened!   The very next morning, Joey was up and walking around!  ( See for yourself at the ASDR YouTube Channel 🙂

Does that mean Joey is out of the woods?   That he does not need any more help?   Of course not!   Hopes that Joey’s neck brace would be enough to heal him were dashed with his latest X Ray!   Joey is going to need surgery to repair the damage that very likely arose from genetic issues in the first place 😦

Joey is so tiny that the surgery carries its own risks.     Joey could become paralyzed!   It is possible he may not even survive the surgery!    So why go this extra mile?    Joey’s spirit is so strong that he has defied all the odds so far!     In other words, the benefits far outweigh the risk!

How can you help?    Donations may be made directly on the ASDR website or to the Bridgetown Animal Hospital.

What time is it?    It is always time to remember that the some of the best bits in life are made possible by a shared journey between the animal loving community and hard-working rescuers in this province.    It was as true for The Mighty Quinn as it could be for little Joey!

If you want to touch the past, touch a rock.  If you want to touch the present, touch a flower.  If you want to touch the future, touch a life.  Author Unknown
